Art and Wonder….

Which of these works of art do you connect with the most? Is there one that you especially like or dislike? Do you have a favorite artist? If you could purchase a piece of art from a museum, what would you buy?
I like no.3 but i would buy no.1, Mondrian
That’s so interesting. Why would you buy the Mondrian over the Hokusai? Do you think it’s more valuable? Isn’t it funny how everyone likes something different for very personal reasons?
oops! Harry, I counted wrong. You said 3- the Degas. That’s my favorite too.
El Guapo most liked the Mondrian. but given the opportunity (and the bank account), he would purchase Van Gogh’s Starry Night or Starry Night Over The Rhone.
So Guapo would invest in Starry Night? Because you like it or because it’s worth big bucks? What do you like about the Mondrian?
Of the photos shown, the first appealed to me most.
And not Starry Night, but a different painting, Starry Night on the Rhone on this page,
The color is not as good in the pic as in real life.
The author of this comment was privileged to see Starry Night at an exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. But in another room was Starry Night on the Rhone, which pulled him in completely.
I don;t care about the value, because I’d never sell it. El Guapo would be just to see.
I saw a Van Gogh exhibit at the Chicago Art Institute and was so moved by his work when I saw it up close. I actually got sort of emotional. I’m glad that you would buy it for it’s beauty and not for it’s value. Starry Night and Starry Night on the Rhone are beyond words. We’re in full agreement. : )
I liked the third the most but even then I wasn’t overly keen on it.
I find pictures like the first one baffling and almost offensive. There is nothing there. When I look at it all I see is an Excel spreadsheet.
I like that you get a visceral reaction to the Mondrian! Haha! It’s so subjective. I like 3 as well. Do you have a favorite artist? if you could buy something from a museum, not for monetary value, but for art’s sake, what would you buy?
I have never really paid close attention to art so I don’t have any favourite artists really.
I have no idea what I would buy to be honest. I quite like landscapes or a picture that looks like it has a story to it.
I went to one of the art galleries in London and there was a huge amount of turgid nonsense. I banged on the side of a large copper box and got told off for touching the exhibits.
It was just a copper box. That was it.
Haha! That’s so funny! Was it the Tate on Thames? I get so turned off when I walk in a room with crap like that, on display. I think it’s funny to watch people study it, like it has a deep and meaningful message attached!
None of these. I would love to own Dali’s Madonna of Port Lligat.
I’m on my iPad. When I get home I’ll look those up. Dali is too surrealistic for me, and by that I mean any surrealism is too much for me! Haha! Isn’t it funny how we’re all so different?
If someone buys art, shouldn’t it be something they love?
Addie! I just looked it up on my iPad. Once I saw it, I knew it. I would never have matched that painting to you!!, haha! What a surprise. Why do you like it?
Both this and this (http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01247/dali2_1247555c.jpg) give me a feeling of humble joy, a connection to God. I love the intensity, the open places saying as much as the painted ones, I just love them. Around the first time I saw them, I read ‘My Name is Asher Lev’, which covers the decisions and choices made by an ultra conservative Hassid who must paint. Eventually, he creates two huge masterpieces–I won’t spoil what they are–and, they create the breaking point between son and father and community. They are never shown, you are left to wonder what they looked like. For me, it was almost a sacrament to see the Dali prints. I do not have a lot of art in my home–what I do have, however, is unique to my soul.
Now, tell—why were you surprised?? 🙂
Thanks for the explanation. That these works of art make you feel more connected to God, humble and joyful is probably what the artist intended. He would be pleased. Art is so subjective. If the end result is that the person viewing them is moved, in any way, either with anger or love or sadness, etc. Then I think the art is successful. Why does art exist in the first place if not to make us feel.
The intensity and the open spaces have the opposite effect on me. I feel unsettled by them… I actually love that you see and feel something completely different, it’s refreshing. (I was surprised because I think the energy that comes off these pieces is masculine, very strong. – thus my surprise!) Also, I don’t know too many people that enjoy surrealism. Okay, you’re the first person! Haha!
I’m obsessed with Degas and Monet. I yearn for a real Monet to go in our “dining room”. It would fit perfectly, dontcha think? Matisse always has too much going on. If I lived in a modern house I would definitely like Mondrian or Lichtenstein. I actually have a Lichtenstein on my facebook right now. But Whistler and Degas ease my soul most of all. Hokusai is cool too though! Paul loves his 36 views of Mt. Fuji.
yes! I love them both, as well. So many ways to look at art. Sometimes it’s hard to see it for just itself, and not what it would look like in a certain space. probably why I like museums? Speaking of that, sometimes I like the colors that Matisse uses but I agree, his paintings are very busy. If I had an island home I would have Gaugain and Matisse. But in general, I need to surround myself with more soothing subjects.
I like the Deags and Hokusai ones the most of these. But I’m not so into modern art… I like to see beauty. It doesn’t have to make much sense but it has to be nice to watch.
I do know though that this is a rather naive way of looking at art.
I’m not into modern art either. I love impressionistic art; scenery that tells a story, like Michael. I like Degas, Homer, Monet, Whistler, Cassat, Potthast, among others.
It is a strange way to look at art. I was looking for strong reactions and some people had them. Art should never be forced. I should have put 2 or 3 pictures up that had the same theme but were different in there style. That might have been a better discussion. At least I see that some of us strongly dislike modern art! Haha!
Isn’t O’Keefe the vagina lady? If she is, I am impressed you found one of her paintings that isn’t offensive.
I don’t see how the last one is art. It looks like something important from a comic book taken out of context. Boo to that one. The rest are all right. I’m not really into art despite having gone to several museums in the last 2 years.
Lol! You’re not alone. Michael Cargill feels the same way. Yes, O’Keefe is the vagina lady. I think she would be proud of that nick name.
The last one is definitely crazy. I saw a Lichtenstein exhibit once. Weird. Like Andy Warhol and his Tomato Soup Can. Pop art belongs in museums or VERY modern spaces. It leaves me cold.
