Stuttering Songs…
M U S I C M O N D A Y
Just when I was running out of ideas for Music Monday, Lily from Canada came up with a doozie! Thanks Lily!
Colin Firth in, “The King’s Speech”
At first mention you might think of one, possibly two songs that have stuttering lyrics, but there are actually several. If you can think of any others please feel free to add them to the list. These songs are fun to sing, why do you suppose that is?
My favorite from this list would be, Changes by David Bowie.
You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet – Bachman Turner Overdrive
Bennie and the Jets – Elton John
Changes – David Bowie
Barbara Ann – The Beach Boys
My Sharona – The Knack
Back in the USSR – The Beatles
Psycho Killer – The Talking Heads
My Generation – The Who
Bad to the Bone – George Thorogood
Touch Me – The Doors
Take a Chance on Me – Abba
K-K-K-Katy – Geoffrey O’Hara (Written in 1917 – so probably the oldest stuttering song?) Nanny, my grandmother from Fort Lauderdale, use to sing this to me.
great list. Since you seem to be stretching the definition of stuttering a little bit (It’s an artistic choice, darnit!) I’m going to throw Touch a Touch a Touch a Touch Me from Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Awesome! That’s a good one. Yeah, some are clearly stuttering and others are more of an effect, I guess?
And yet none of them are as bad as the mangling on In A Gadda De Vida.
Yeah, almost put it down but then felt like it was just too psychedelic for me. Haha! But you’re right, it works.
I’ve never heard that one! I actually like it a lot. So perfect!
Great post by the way, there are many songs that would fit this topic. Foolin by def Leppard would be another one.
Thanks. Yeah, it’s surprising how many there are. When Lily first gave me her idea I was thinking of maybe 2 or 3 but then she gave me her list and I was like, whoa! Plenty of stuttering to go around.
Foolin, by Def Leppard definitely works and in addition, brings back all those memories from the 80’s! Wow! So cheesy : )
Def Leppard now touring with Poison and Lita Ford.
I plan to miss that show.
Hi,
A perfect list, and I like Johns video as well. 🙂
Poker Face~~Lady Gaga
Lola~~The Kinks and
SUrfing Bird!
PS Good subject–I love the ones where we have to dig through our little brains.
Yeah, who knew there were so many?
How fun! I have never thought about stuttering in songs before. Good job!
Lily must get all the credit. She probably is wishing she had kept this idea for herself now that everyone is enjoying it so much! Haha!
Stuttering songs! I love it! Lily did a good job coming up with that one! Here’s one from 1962. I’m gonna be warm this winter — by Connie Francis.
I love Connie Francis! I couldn’t remember this one? I can’t believe how easy it is to just highlight the title, hit google, and it takes me right to a Youtube of that song. Isn’t it a crazy and immediate world we live in? I marvel about it everyday.
But yeah, that’s perfect. And 1962 – the year I was born — no wonder I didn’t have perfect recall, the first time I heard it I was in utero! haha!
And you did a post just last week about how you were born in 1962! So really it’s your song. The song you were practically born to listen to.
I remember that song because we had the 45 single and I made up a little dance and pantomime to it. Ah! to be ten years old again! Everything was so much fun.
I love google. I don’t know how we ever lived without access to so much information. And lately I can’t go anywhere without my phone. I didn’t used to feel that way. But now I don’t even want to go for a walk without it!
hahaha! I know what you mean. I tried to talk my husband out of buying me an iPad for my birthday because, as I told him, I’m NEVER going to use it. Lol! The joke’s on me, because now I don’t go anywhere without it!
Seems like a “shout out” to Mel Tillis would have been appropriate. HF
Mel Tillis is in good company — James Earl Jones, Winston Churchill, John Stossel, Carly Simon, etc. I had a little trouble when I was younger but was able to get over it.
It really is such a difficult and emotional thing to hear someone struggling with it.
Thanks for that contribution, HF.
I love me some Winston Churchill. That man could turn a phrase! Back in the day, seriously crushed on Carly Simon. I would have certainly helped with any struggles she might have had. HF
HF, I bet you would have… *a little smirk*
I didn’t have the “crush” on Carly Simon but I did, and still do, think she’s pretty great. She’s one of my favorites. As far as Mr. Churchill goes, sharing the diagnosis of dyslexia with the likes of him, helped me to believe that underneath all of my struggles that I might actually be intelligent? He did wonders for my self-esteem.
This is too cool! I’ve never thought of this before. But I LOOOVE stutter songs! Of course, I can’t think of any on the spot. Lol.
*ten minutes later* Chameleon is an awesome one.
Hahaha! That’s actually a GREAT ONE! See, just when I think there are no more, little miss lovely comes up with a perfect one. : )
Hahahaha. I try!
The Husband who know All things musical suggest two stutter songs:
‘Peggy Sue’ Buddy Holly Maybe it’s a hick-up instead of stutter. But it is pretty spastic for 1958.
For Sure
“Changes” By Davie Bowie
I love Buddy Holly! How did Peggy Sue get over looked? That’s such an American classic, isn’t it? Tell your all knowing husband, thanks!
Awesome list! I never really thought of all of those songs that way. The Reflex by Duran Duran. Ah, the 80s loved their stutter songs. 🙂
And yet another that I didn’t think of! I was a Duran Duran girl, for sure. I loved John Taylor – so cute.
I got the tag and the award, by the way, and will get on top of it very soon. I’m super busy today with elections in our state, etc. (That’s how I know I’m old – I get as excited for my candidate as I do for John Taylor! haha!)
Thank You, Thank You!!!! For nominating me for the good apple award. And I’m not sure I should thank you for tagging me ; / hahah!
I never would have picked up on this idea before. I’m not sure how much I can add. I’d think Steven Tyler or Robert Plant would have stuttered a lot. They liked showing off their girl voices and girl hips. I’m still amazed how Ozzy Osbourne never stutters when he sings. I know SNL did a bit on that years ago. Or maybe I had a dream about that. Like when I dreamt up The Blues Brothers and David Spade saying “Buh-Bye” on an airplane.
I swear I commented on this? But nope! Geeze I’m really slackin! Stuttering songs are pretty cool, especially when you memorize all of the stuttering parts so you sound like a fool when you’re singing. Note to self: avoid all of these songs for Karaoke.
Hahah! I know, I can’t figure out why I like to sing these so much – I guess I’m just a natural foolio.
I feel bad. This is like my most popular post ever and you just handed it to me on a silver platter. Sars. I tried to give you props and such where I could. Now everyone thinks I’m awesome! hahaha!
Lol noooo I’m glad everyone liked it! If I could think of this, I can definitely think of more weird things…just gimme some time!
haha! Yeah, the fact that Ozzy Osbourne doesn’t stutter is a bit weird. If anyone should, it should be him.
Lily and I always like to say “Buh-bye” when we hate someone. David Spade cracks me up.
By the way, Lily gets full credit for this idea. I feel bad taking her idea that everyone seemed to like. Oh well.
The “nuna nuna nuna nuna nuna” knees knees part from Welcome to the Jungle.
Your music posts always get me thinking for the rest of the day.
Like I said – this is ALL LILY! She gets credit.
Would Scatman John’s “Scatman” count? A stutterer, Scatman once stated that scatting was “turning my biggest problem into my biggest asset.”
Hey Eric,
That would absolutely count. Good one! I’m so amazed that everyone keeps coming up with more. I started out thinking there were 3, maybe 4 at the most! Haha! I’m so dumb ; )
