What NOT to see at the theaters this weekend…
F I L M R E V I E W F R I D A Y AND W E E K E N D P O T P O U R R I!
This has been an especially bad week for movie going so, even though I really wanted my weekly ration of buttered popcorn, I chose not to go.
Let’s go down the list and I’ll tell you my thoughts regarding some of this week’s offerings and why I think you should stay away.
- TITANIC – Been there, done that.
- THE THREE STOOGES – Seriously? The old TV show was marginally funny. You have to really enjoy that physical humor to sit through a re-make of the original. Not even a bucket of corn could lure me into this one.
- AMERICAN REUNION – Ugh! I refuse to go to something that the studios slap together because they think it’ll be a money maker. Aren’t there better projects to spend all that money on?
- THE CABIN IN THE WOODS – This looks beyond stupid. It’s rated R for strong bloody horror, (Hello.) violence, gore, language, drug use, sexuality and nudity. Not exactly my cup of tea. haha!
- LOCKOUT – Rated PG 13. Viewers gave this an 80% rating and the Critics gave it 48%. I’m probably gonna side with the critics on this one. All you need to know is that the plot involves a rioting prison in outer space, the president’s daughter is there (for some unknown reason), and someone (Guy Pearce) is sent to go retrieve her and bring her back to earth. Enough said.
- MIRROR MIRROR – This looks painful. I’m guessing even kids will give this a thumbs down.
- DR. SEUSS – THE LORAX – I love Dr. Seuss stories. I like them in their book form, though. In the early 1970’s cartoonist Chuck Jones did an amazing job adapting, Cat In The Hat, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, and Horton Hears a Who. The studios today, however, really need to stay away from these wonderful tales. For whatever reason they always make them look garish and too modern. No need to gild the Lily, Hollywood! Didn’t Dr. Seuss already make them fanciful enough? This modern telling of the Lorax looks bad. Viewers gave it 73% and Critics gave it 47%. Just read the book to your kids – they’ll enjoy it more.
- ***21 JUMP STREET – After I wrote this post I reconsidered this film based on recommendations from Lily in Canada and Sandylikeabeach. I did go Sunday night and was VERY amused. In fact, I would give it high marks for pure comedy. Good stuff. See it if you need some laughs. Also, this was the perfect movie for Channing Tatum — FINALLY!
- WRATH OF THE TITANS – Not even Liam Neeson, Sam Worthington and Ralph Fiennes could tempt me to see this piece o’ crap. Viewers gave it a 65% and Critics gave it 37%. Watch the trailer and tell me this doesn’t look atrocious.

“FOOTNOTE”
If I wasn’t too lazy to get in my car and drive downtown, this is the film I would have seen. Viewers gave it 100% (WOW!) and Critics gave it 82%. It’s rated PG and is 105 minutes. It’s in Hebrew, so there are subtitles. The story is about a rivalry between a father and son. Watch the preview and see what you think.

Somehow I completely missed the news of the reissue of Titanic until this morning. Even if I were able to see it I don’t think i would…too too sad! I’d be crying in 3D!
That’s how I feel. It’s so sad and depressing. You’d really have to be in that crying mood to go see this. “Crying in 3D!” LOL!!!
I was totally unaware that it was the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic and so I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why they were re-releasing this. Haha!
Guy pearce was in Memento, which, if you haven’t seen, I can’t reccomend highly enough.
On another note, I see you’re going with the John Phillips Creative Calendar method of scheduled posts.
Sigh…
haha! Glad you noticed! John and I have backed ourselves into a corner. He blames “Springtime” on his delinquency. Sounds good to me!
I never did see Memento but I’ve heard good things about it. Is that the one that tells the story in reverse? I’m sure I’d like it.
Yeah, that’s the one. It really is a well crafted story, And the punchline (which explains the beginning) caught me completely be surprise
It’s Saturday, time for Wandering Wednesday. You don’t like the 3 stooges? I bet it is very funny. Footnote looks interesting though. I agree with El G on Memento, greta movie.
Lol! El Guapo seems too aware of our blogging issues.
I’ll have to see Memento – I just never got around to it.
I almost do it on purpose now. If you do watch it,, make sure you are able to pay attention or it might lose you.
Hmmm….deep thoughts today, my friend! LOL!
Totally agree on The Three Stooges and 21 Jump Street! Three Stooges was awful when it was in it’s original form. I hated it! 21 Jump Street was pretty good in it’s original form, but it was NOT a comedy. What is it with movie execs wanting to change the formatting? I might be interested in seeing it if they weren’t making it a comedy.
Titanic – totally agree. Why would I need to see it a 2nd time? I know what happens, and 3D isn’t going to make it any more suspense-filled since I know what’s coming. 🙂
The Lorax – Didn’t see it, but I will say it was an AWESOME tool for getting my kids out from under my nose for a couple of hours during Spring Break! 🙂 Seriously…you can’t beat that with a stick!
The Cabin in the Woods – just looked at the preview and it looks intriguing. Not great, but intriguing enough that I’d see it. It looks a bit like The Hunger Games meets Jason.
The Footnote – I watched the trailer you linked and it *does* look good. I just wish it wasn’t in subtitles. I hate subtitles. 🙂
By the way…don’t you usually do these on Friday? I was looking for it yesterday. LOL! 🙂
Cathie, I’m so surprised! You would’ve been the last person I would have thought would be in line for, “The Cabin in the Woods.” Lol! Is it the “Strong Bloody Horror” that tempts you? I guess that if you like slasher movies or Jason movies, this one will be up your alley. (I know my kids do.)
As far as having young kids… basically any rated G movie will do. If you’re a mom and you want your kids out of your hair then you really don’t care about what the critics say. I agree. Been there done that. Some are worse than others, though.
Hahaha! I don’t see very many slasher movies, and I don’t care for blood and guts and gore…but I guess this one looked vaguely interesting. LOL!
Have you seen the trailer for the Snow White remake that’s coming out? Now THAT looks actually quite good. Not for kids, I wouldn’t imagine, though.
Hahaha! I’ll never equate you with slasher movies. My brain couldn’t handle it.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing! It looks amazing. That’s one that I’m looking forward to.
My problem with The Lorax is I never remember the original book of the same name. Did I miss something? At least you used the term “gild the Lily” and now know the origin behind half of your children’s names.
I think to like The Three Stooges you have to be a male over 50. It’s like a Naked Gun movie minus the puns. I hear in this one Moe pokes Larry and Curly in the eyes.
My Lily is one that never needs gilding – she’s perfect the way she is. This Lorax looks too neon and modern. I don’t love the animation. I’m sure it’s okay if you’re a kid — I just like my old Dr. Seuss.
I’m not a big fan of physical humor. I’d probably laugh more at Jackass, to be honest, only because they’re laughing at themselves. I think you’re right. It’s for men over 50 or 10 year old boys.
I have to actually agree with every one of your ratings.. Won’t be seeing any of these. I’m an Indie/foreign film fan anyway… as for The good Dr Suess remake, this video by “Burning Man ” (now that’s one helluva convention) of “Oh, the places you’ll go” is worth my 10 bucks and here it is for free:
I’m guessing, since I haven’t seen it, that you’d probably like Footnote? I think it looks great.
This was my first look at “Oh the Places You’ll Go” video by “Burning Man.” It sort of reminded me of what a Mad Max convention might look like. Strange in a freaky sort of way. Not sure what Dr. Seuss would think of it?
I’ll check out Footnote. I think Dr Seuss would like it.. after all, they personify his message to a Tee!!
(Yes they are freaky, cool)
Loved reading your thoughts on these movies! It’s so funny because when I got to the end I saw “footnote” and I thought it was the footnote to your post. And then, Ok, this sounds like a good movie, but I wonder what the name of it is? Then, of course, I had to slap my forehead when I clicked on the trailer. Duh . . .
I also can’t believe how much I came away from this post hungry for popcorn! I’m almost so desperate I might see whatever is playing closeby. (I hope it’s Footnote!)
I realized that about “Footnote” after I put it on the bottom of the post! haha! But I was too lazy to fix it : )
Linda, I’ll sit through just about anything for a delicious bucket of popcorn. I do mean ANYTHING! : D
“Footnote” does look good. Unfortunately the good ones are always playing at the furthest theater from my home.
Hi,
Once a month we have a girls day out, we usually go out for lunch then a movie, no movie the other day, 2 reasons for this, as you stated there was nothing on we all really wanted to see, plus it is school holidays here at the moment, when the holidays are over hopefully there will be a better selection. 🙂
I understand. It’s disappointing when there’s nothing of worth to see. We’re now heading into our summer season which usually means all the “Blockbusters” will be released. The quality of films goes down significantly during the summer as the studio executives like to cater to the 16 to 24 year old demographic.
Maybe, if we’re lucky, there will be one or two decent ones to see?
Cabin in the Woods looks so dumb. I oringinally thought it was going to be a prequel to The Ring, but it’s not. Therefore dumb. 21 Jump Street is actually pretty funny. I liked it! But it doesn’t take much to entertain me. Also, TITANIC IS A CLASSIC!
I would see 21 Jump Street on your recommendation – but for some reason it’s not calling to me. Cabin in the Woods looks pretty slashery. Why is it always a bunch of 22 years olds on an adventure? So cliche. It’s so obvious which actors are going to get killed first – the ones who are unknowns! haha!
Thank you for saving me a tank o’gas. Instead, I’ll watch TCM.
Smart girl!
Absolute joke that they’re bringing out Titanic in 3D just because it’s the 100 year anniversary. My girlfriend is one of the people that is stupid enough to pay £9 to go and see it when you can by the DVD for a fiver! 3D is so overrated.
Pirates in an adventure with scientists is worth watching in you like clay-mation 🙂 I also wouldn’t mind seeing Battleship, it looks like a film that’s all action and no plot haha. Though being in England, the films probably already on DVD in the US =/
3D is total crap and it’s laughable that they would think to put it with Titanic! Haha! Why, so we can feel what it’s like to drown?
When does Battleship come out, this summer? For England it will be out for Christmas! Haha!
It’s out in England now, it has Liam Neeson in it so it’s bound to be awesome. Because anything Liam does is great… or he’ll kill you.
Aside from that I don’t know if there are any other films I’d wanna see. I don’t watch television that much anymore so I never see adverts for films anymore haha.
See, this is one of those cases where England got a film before us. Maybe because it has Liam Neeson? Who knows, but good for you. If you like it then I’ll go see it when it comes out here.
I’ve been to Titanic… and it freaked me out :). I was full of regret when I saw all the people dying… Ewww.
It’s a really great movie but it’s so sad and depressing. I felt like I was living through it. It’s good that you saw it but I know what you mean, Ewww.
I reluctantly saw 21 Jump Street. The trailers were marginally funny, so I went with my friend not expecting much, but the movie was very funny. My friend and I laughed through the entire film. There are also lots of movie references to please film buffs.
You’re the second person that’s recommended it, the first being my daughter. I’ve resisted but your comment might have just tipped the scales. Okay, I’ll see it and get the bucket of popcorn I was craving. Thanks, Sandy.
I just happened along this blog, nice spot you have here.
Thanks Sightsnbytes! Glad you dropped by!
Not going to lie. Went to see American Reunion and Wrath of the Titans back to back with my girlfriend, a buddy, and his girlfriend. We did the sneaky double feature. American Reunion wasn’t awful, but it was downright stupid and painfully funny. Wrath of the Titans was a contrived excuse of a sequel.
Yeah, better movies must be released!
Oh, I’m relieved! I thought you you were going to say they were both amazing! haha! I did end up seeing 21 Jump street and I actually liked it – so there you go.
Desperate times call for desperate measures. I’m actually going to see “The Lucky One” today. Looks like a typical semi-cheesy Nicholas Sparks story. It has Zac Effron who looks like he’s 12 years old, so we’ll see. I’ll report back later today.
