The Lucky One

I bravely ventured out today to see “The Lucky One.” It’s based on the Nicholas Sparks book by the same name. It stars Zac Efron as Sergeant Logan Thibault, a baby faced marine who has returned from his third tour of duty. (He definitely looks like a 12 year old at times, I’m just saying…) If you’ve seen the trailer you pretty much know the story. While fighting, he spots a photograph in a pile of rubble, picks it up, and is spared his life when a bomb goes off nearby. He then searches for the girl in the photo, with only a lighthouse in the background to go by.

This Nicholas Sparks story, like it’s romantic predecessors, Nights in Rodanthe, Message in a Bottle, a Walk to Remember and *The Notebook, is fairly predictable. You go along for the ride because the romance is enjoyable, the people are beautiful, the acting is decent, the sets are romantic, and the ending is happy. It’s that simple. I did feel like it was a little too convenient in places, one in particular where I almost audibly guffawed. I was half waiting for Lassie to come to the rescue.

*”The Notebook” is the one book by Nicholas Sparks that I feel was made into a wonderful movie. IT’S VERY ROMANTIC. (Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling)

I can’t be super negative, although many critics were way harsh, and I can’t be really enthusiastic because frankly, it was slightly cheesy. I’m giving it a grade of C+ to B- for being a passable date movie.
