“You Really Got Me…”
I thought for this music monday I would share a true story from my wild youth. I may have alluded to this experience in a previous post but I’d like, this time, to fill in a few more of the details. For those of you who watched Mad Men last night you’ll remember that the episode closed with a popular song from The Kinks, “You Really Got Me.” This is what triggered my idea for today’s post.
It was the summer of 1979. I was 17 years old. My boyfriend, Doug Schmidt, was a huge fan of The Kinks and had indoctrinated me from the start of our relationship with every song, album, and moment of Kinks history, etc. as boyfriends often do. It didn’t surprise me when he showed up at my house one afternoon with two concert tickets to see the “Low Budget” Tour (that was the actual name of the album). The Kinks would be playing in a small venue in Poughkeepsie, New York — only about an hour away.
Here’s some important information you should know about my concert going practices. Having grown up in New York I attended MANY concerts as a teenager. I thought I was a pro. Even though I was a teenager, I had it in my head that wearing something other than jeans and a tee shirt, say, a skirt or dress and heels, would create the illusion that I was more sophisticated, and not your average screaming, jumping concert goer. My master plan for any concert event, always included multiple attempts to get close to the stage. To enjoy the concert from the front row and possibly make eye contact with a band member, well, that would be the big prize. My son assures me that most kids feel this way. I’m pretty sure I liked the challenge. Also, keep in mind that with heels on I’m over 6′. Some girls hate being tall; I always viewed it as advantageous, especially in these situations.
Fast forward to the concert hall. It was a very small venue. It almost felt like a high school auditorium. Much to my delight our seats were fairly close to the stage — I’m guessing in the vicinity of row 10? Not bad but still, the question remained, could we somehow maneuver our way to the front? In these situations, timing is everything. We waited for the lights to dim and the show to start before we made our move. Eventually we reached the edge of the stage, sure, maybe I stepped on some people’s toes or intimidated them with my determination and height but no matter, we got there!
THEN IT HAPPENED…
As I was studying Dave Davies, brother of lead singer, Ray Davies, play the guitar he looked up and made eye contact with me! Oh Wow! I was completely entranced. He actually looked at me! I’m not sure which song they were playing when the eye contact happened, but it didn’t matter because the next sequence of events would prove to be the pinnacle of my concert going career. The band started playing, “You Really Got Me” — one of my favorite Kinks songs. The audience was going crazy. The next thing I knew, Dave Davies crossed the stage bent down in front of me and KISSED ME!!! He got up and returned back to where he had been standing only to walk back, bend down and kiss me a second time!!!!!! It was pure fantasy. As Doug Schmidt as my witness, these events did occur. Now when I hear, “You Really Got Me”, I’m transported back to that moment in time.
Did I get asked back stage. YES. Did I go? NO! I’m not a groupie! Sheesh!

You wild thing!! Great adventure–I’d have swooned.
I can’t get the youtube clip to come up! I just called Lily to see if she could help me.
Yeah, I was a wild child – haha! When I heard them play it last night on the Mad Men credits I knew what I would write about for music monday. The thrill lasted me a long time. : )
Oh my freaking fabulous wow! That is fantastic! Lol
Haha! It’s one of those things that stays with you for a lifetime. I can’t help but smile when I think of it. Of course it makes me feel very old too… I try not to go there! ha!
I remember dances and concerts well, they were the days 🙂
It’s good to remember, eh? Seems so long ago…
You bottled it Lisa. Bottled it well and truly.
Top story though.
I just finished watching the latest Mad Men episode actually.
Thanks, Michael. It was one of the highlights of my life. I thought last night’s episode of Mad Men was really good — though I can’t believe Joanie slept with that gross guy. Eww.
That is a GREAT story. Although personally I would have had a reaaaaalllly hard time NOT going backstage. I admire your restraint!
Yeah, well, between you and me, I might have gone backstage had it not been for the puppy dog look on my boyfriend’s face. Oh well, perhaps it was for the best?
True, it probably was for the best. It’s a great story to be able to tell even with groupie action!
Yeah, it makes me sound way cooler than I am. It’s a great anecdote when I’m feeling like a big loser! haha!
WoWoWOW! I just had to sit and think about what a wonderful moment that must have been– that happened TWICE! Talk about the ultimate in concert attending experiences! And you got asked backstage! I had to laugh when I read that. It reminded me of the line from Waynes World where Mike Meyers goes backstage and tells the security guard he has to get backstage because his girlfriend is back there and the security guard answers, “a lot of people’s girlfriends are back there!” HA HA! I bet Doug was feeling a little like that (even tho you didn’t go backstage of course!!)
😀
I was just telling Madame Weebles that I might have gone backstage but I don’t think Doug was invited. haha! He looked sort of anxious and uncomfortable – I couldn’t just leave him there. It was enough to have been kissed during that song – I was on cloud 9 for several weeks following. Naturally I had to re-tell the story to everyone I knew and everyone I didn’t know. LOL! It’s a great memory. (somehow it managed to stay in my self cleaning oven of a brain! ha!)
This is definitely your best story. It’s one that I tell people I meet in hopes that they think I’m cool because I’m related to you. I only tell it when The Kinks are mentioned though. Pretty great memory! Too bad I wasn’t a wild child like you!
Thanks my Lil! You must admit that being tall helps in those situations.
It’s funny because I throw your name around hoping it makes me cool! haha!
You could have slept with a member of the Kinks and didn’t…girl what were you thinking???…hahaha…in retrospect probably a good choice.
Susie, my wife now, but in 1964 just a young, petite, 18 year old with long blonde hair to her waist, was walking down 38th Street in Indianapolis when a black Cadillac limo pulled to the curb. This was the days before tinted windows and she could clearly see the four shaggy haired youth inside. The passenger side window rolled down and Paul McCartney leaned out to ask if she had a ticket for their show that evening at the State Fair grounds. After a second or two she was finally able to stammer out that she had a ticket and was planning on going. He then said, “Well tell the policeman at stage right Paul said she could come back stage and then spell my name backwards, L-U-A-P.”
She went to the concert, but never went to stage right…
Be encouraged!
WOW!!!! That’s quite a story. I would have gone into paralysis or fainted at the sight of them rolling up in the car! haha!
There are so many little choices we make along the way in life. I always wonder “What if…?” Who knows what would have happened if she had gotten back stage.
It’s amazing how we turn into mush when we’re face to face with iconic celebrity.
That’s an incredible story. One to treasure.
Actually I’m sort of glad she didn’t go…I would have hated to be compared to Sir Paul…geesh how would me as a mere mortal ever overcome that?…I would have been in therapy for years…LOL. 🙂 🙂 🙂
Be encouraged!
Very cool!
Ok, so Doug was all puppy faced. But did this have a good or bad effect on the relationship?
He seemed more and more okay with it as we drove home. In the world of guys, maybe he even felt a little cool that his girlfriend had been kissed? I don’t know. I think he was just relieved that I didn’t stay for a private encore performance. haha!
So no, it didn’t hurt the relationship.
Great story! One of those great ones told with a beer (or beverage of your choice) around a campfire.
Now that I’m turning 50 I need these stories to remind me I was once cool. haha!
Been there done that. The 50 part that is. I’m still cool so I don’t even worry about that.
That makes me feel much better. I consider you to be uber cool, so if I’m in that club I’m good.
Btw, I’m glad you were talking about your age and not kissing D. Davies. Phew.
Lol. He did a double take 🙂
haha! I suppose he did : ) It was all more than I could have imagined.
LOVE THIS SONG and I’d forgotten about it so now I’m adding to my playlist. I’ve been to many concerts as well and that’s pretty freakin’ cool that he sang the song to you and kissed you. I bet your 17-year old heart was full!!! I would have been like you though, something about the whole “groupie” thing never much appealed to me either. :). (BTW, just ’cause you’re 50 doesn’t mean you’re not cool).
Thanks Brigitte! It was definitely cool and it’s such a good song. The whole thing about going backstage, when you boil it down, is sort of gross. I mean what’s the expectation? It sounds exciting but on closer inspection it would’ve been weird and uncomfortable and NOT ME.
Thanks for believing in the idea that we can retain our coolness into our 50s and beyond. I hope we can. : )
Did Schmitty become a huge fan of The Who the next day out of rage?
I had “30 Rock” castmember Judah Friedlander ask me about my hat outside of a bathroom one time. Still waiting to actually get a kiss from someone.
I think D. Schmidt felt like he had indirectly gotten kissed! Haha! All of a sudden I went up a couple notches. At least in my own mind. Ha! Maybe your ” kiss” is coming. Everything has to be aligned perfectly in the universe for it to happen.
Get outta here.. how flipping cool is that… 🙂
I saw Rod Stewart backstage at a concert (I think I was 16 or 17) and I know he looked right at me (well I say he did..lol)
Great memory for you!!
Tee hee… It was way cool. Having that song makes it even better.
I LOVE me some Rod Stewart. Backstage, eh? I’m pretty sure he looked at you – I think he had quite an eye for beautiful girls.
Good enough for seconds, that’s pretty hot. Makes me think about regrets and roads not taken. Regrets, too few to mention. btw, I’m with you in that over 50 crowd. Enjoy always, T
Thanks, Tricia. It was hot! I’m glad I have that memory. Yeah, I always wonder about where my life would be if I had made different choices along the way – not necessarily with regard to this instant, but just in general. One thing I know for sure, youth is wasted on the young. Haha!
If only I knew then what I know now…
Glad to be a member of the 50 and older set!
Have a great day!
Lisa
Was Doug jealous? Or completely impressed that his girl got the attention of Ray Davies?
I think he would have been more jealous if it had been Ray Davies and not his brother Dave Davies. Haha! But still… tee hee. Good times.
Hi,
Wow, a moment to remember, good one. 🙂
Had to click over to you tube, I just love that song.
Thanks Mags! Yeah, it’s definitely right up there with some of my best memories. : )
And I agree, I love that song. Classic.
